Originally funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe program as a Coordination and Support Action (2024-2026), the Global Image Data Ecosystem (GIDE) connects different biological and preclinical image data resources across the globe to allow metadata and data sharing. This GIDE:BioImaging search portal provides a single federated search interface over a number of biological imaging databases that contribute to GIDE. We currently display data from the BioImage Archive (BIA), the Image Data Resource (IDR), and SSBD:repository and SSBD:database.
The GIDE:BioImaging search portal and its supporting components are managed jointly by the organisations that operate its constituent indexed databases and the underlying infrastructure, namely: EMBL-EBI (the BioImage Archive), Open Microscopy Environment (OME), and RIKEN.
These three core operating partners decide by consensus on the metadata model and interchange profile, on the roadmap for the portal, index and API, on the governance of the FBbi ontology, and on the management of the project’s code repositories. Day to day operation of the portal is handled by EMBL-EBI. Decisions on which new resources are indexed are taken together with the Euro-BioImaging Bio-Hub, by consensus where possible and otherwise by majority vote.
We welcome interest from other biological image data resources that would like to be discoverable through the portal. Being indexed means your metadata is exposed through GIDE:BioImaging search, and that you enter a metadata alignment relationship with the core operating partners, working towards the GIDE recommendations and the RO-Crate interchange profile.
